DENTAL INSURANCE
Dental Insurance typically covers most preventive care but only about 50% of the cost of major services like root canals and crowns. Many plans won't cover implants and require a waiting period for major services. Most traditional policies have an annual maximum that they'll pay for your dental work. The cost of the plan is typically pegged to this annual maximum. .
If you anticipate that you will need a lot of dental work, it might be worth it to buy a more expensive plan with a higher limit or possibly even sign up for two plans. In many cases the cost of the additional plan would be more than offset by what you would pay in coinsurance.
On the other hand, if you don't need a lot of work, a dental discount plan would in most cases cost less and provide just as much benefit. These plans are typically HMO's (i.e. you can only use network dentists) that are contracted to offer services at a discounted price which can be 60%+ less than many non-network providers.
